I am not a fob..

But I love any wuxia TV series by Jin Yong. I noticed that there is a new version of Shen Diao Xia Lu (神鵰俠侶 or Return of Condor Heroes) out that was shot primarily in China. I didn't bother posting this on my Rotten Tomatoes blog because nobody there watches stuff like this, but um.. here on Xanga there are definitely more um native Chinese speakers who like to throw peace signs in every 3rd picture :P

Does anyone know if the new series is any good? It LOOKS good, especially the scenery, but that doesn't really mean anything if the main actors suck or they bastardize the story. The style fits something like House of Flying Daggers and Crouching Tiger/Hidden Dragon, which might not be a good thing since those movies were 95% style, 5% substance. I saw bits of pieces of some of the more recent adaptations and they were pretty bad. The Taiwan version was horrible. Can't beat the early 80's version with Andy Lau. They seem to remake this series every 3-4 years which just shows how fricking popular it is, probably the most popular series by the most popular Chinese author.

There are DVDs for sale on eBay straight from China that I'm not sure if I should get. A friend pointed out that the english subs would probably be horrible, but hopefully my mandarin hasn't gotten so bad out of lack of use that I need them :) My brother and I grew up watching these (mostly the trilogy that this series belongs to), it's pretty much how we learned to speak Chinese. We'd watch them a few episodes at a time with my mom in the summer.. one day we caught her skipping ahead without us after she sent us to bed because she didn't want to wait until the next day. Sneaky mom!
